Excellent article! At the risk of telling your granny how to suck eggs, I'm reminded of the City, where a chap's word used to be his bond. Dare to break this convention and word would spread and you would never to do business again. Therefore short term gains weren't worth the risk.

What happened after the big bang when barrow boys (who didn't understand the pact) and formal regulations replaced the informal system? It's like a film where it all goes to shit after successful robbers (the closed shop had to go) turn on each other.

We're seeing how the logic of individualistic dog it dog capitalism ultimately plays out as winners give two fingers to losers and the losers get antsy.

To defend the critique of the Green Lantern theory, no one said at the time that the US President couldn't murder citizens in cold blood, loot the Treasury etc - no one even thought about that.

The relevant point, even more applicable to Trump than to Obama, is that the US President can't make peace between Russia and Ukraine, or run Venezuela at a profit.

And the counterpoint is that the US President has always had the power to pull Israel into line (one of the big issues in the early Green Lantern debate) as long as they were willing to face down the domestic pro-Israel lobby. Trump finally did it, at least partially.
